Building Data Could - I lead the scalability and reliability track of the Metadata Service. I work with a group of talented engineers to ensure data cloud operates reliably at scale. The code we write, gets executed across most features, and the impact is cross-team and cross-functional. High-performance message polling, caching, API validation, rate limiting, load distribution are some examples. I have led an architectural improvement initiative to split overgrown monolithic microservices running on kubernetes into smaller microservices that handle API, process background job, and respond to events and notifications separately. This resulted in separation of concerns and independent scaling which improved performance and prepared Data Cloud for the expected growth in business. I worked with leads from three microservice teams to implement and roll this out to production.I built GRPC caching into microservice communication for Data Cloud. The cache is backed by Redis and pluggable in any GRPC server or client. Enabling cache reduced API traffic and DB usage by 50x, and p99 API latencies by 20x. I worked with leads from three teams and guided them to integrate cache into their microservices on the server-side. Their clients have enabled client-side of the cache, and as of now, we handle billions of requests per day for Data Cloud in production across tens of microservices.Syncing of metadata across multiple persistent stores such as relational databases and iceberg datalake and catalog with different transactional semantics was another pain point that I tackled for Data Cloud. I worked across two different teams to build a performant and resilient metadata sync pipeline, using techniques from database replication and distributed storage systems such as transaction log, Apache Arrow based protocol for streaming transactions, two phase commit, and resilient workflows. This resulted in 99.99% reduction in messages en/dequeued, 99.96% reduction in errors.
