ABOUT ALI B. ATTAIE
I am a social entrepreneur at heart. Over the past decade, I have been working to build our team and organization that operates a hybrid \"shared value\" business model (Michael Porter & Mark Kramer, HBR 2011) inspired by the design thinking approach. We provide accessible quality pediatric dental services to primarily underserved children (over annual visit across all our hub and spoke locations) in New York City with an emphasis on prevention and patient empowerment while at the same time providing high level specialized and dental surgical services when necessary. Our work aims to gain strategic and operational advantage from collaborations between private, public / non-profit (WIC, healthfirst, foundations), governmental and academic organizations (CMS, Mount Sinai, NYU Langone & College of Dentistry, Pratt Institute & Parsons) that can maximize the social benefits to the society. Along with our team, we are particularly interested the application of design thinking and reverse innovation (Vijay Govindarajan & Ravi Ramamurti, HBRP 2018) towards solving oral health access and quality issues. As part of this effort we have created our internal innovation design lab (hellosmile.com/LAB) where we work with changemakers in various disciplines to address our social entrepreneurial challenges. Previously, I served as the chief fo pediatric dental services and residency program director at the Icahn Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Health System. During my tenure, I worked with Dr. Angela Diaz to co-found the Adolescent Health Center\'s Dental Clinic which continues to provide free dental care of the children and adolescents of East Harlem. I continue to serve on the faculty at Mount Sinai teaching residents didactically and in the operating room. I also serve on the healthcare quality improvement council for Healthfirst, New York City\'s largest insurer of Managed Medicaid beneficiaries with over 1.3 million members.
