Earlier in his career, Al held the position of Process System Design Engineer at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) on CANDU 600 for 3 years (July 1980 - July 1983). From July 1978 to July 1980, Al was a Project Engineer at Stern Laboratory (previously known as Westinghouse Canada Limited Laboratory) in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Al completed a PhD in Engineering Physics (Materials Science) from McMaster University in 1978. Additionally, Al received an MSc in Mechanical Engineering (Heat Transfer) from the University of Manitoba in 1973. Al also earned a BSc in Nuclear Engineering from Alexandria University in 1967.
