WORK HISTORY
Senior Systems Engineer @Hitachi Rail
London, GB
Managing and mentoring an extremely high-performing team of Engineers. Two members of my team were recognised for their talent by promotion to Senior Engineer in 2023 and they now lead their own Functional Architecture and Infotainment teams.Implemented a process for management of TCMS bugs and modifications, ensuring that all required information is provided to the factory as a matter of course, reducing overhead in reaching agreement and improving the quality of designs overall.Formalised responsibilities as a manager by developing a coaching process for my team members. I meet monthly with each member to track goals, recognise successes and record their personal portfolio of work. I have developed a personal development plan for each member and I regularly take action to ensure their development is maintained and all opportunities are taken.Leading the design, verification and validation of TCMS modifications on a number of business- and industry-critical projects including: upgrade of existing bi-mode (electric-diesel) AT-300 train to hybrid (battery-electric-diesel), upgrade of existing N-DAS integrated into Hitachi’s TCMS to a C-DAS, upgrade of existing ETCS to baseline 3 as part of ECDP and introduction of a fleet of new trains on a new platform for West Coast Partnership.Founding member of the UK Rolling Stock Innovation Board, running regular engagement sessions with the wider team and business with the aim of building a culture of innovation in Hitachi Rail.

SKILLS
ABOUT ALEXANDER WARD MENG
I am a proactive, passionate and persistent Senior Systems Engineer with a Master’s degree in Electronic & Electrical Engineering and 10 years\' experience in rolling stock.I have excellent knowledge of all on-train systems, especially train control and monitoring systems (TCMS), driver advisory systems (DAS) and passenger information systems (PIS) as well as CCTV, train-shore communications, driver’s cab, signalling, judicial recording unit, traction and auxiliary power supply (APS). I am a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and I am working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.I led the successful introduction of TCMS for Hitachi’s six high-speed intercity 80X fleets and I am currently leading the introduction of TCMS for the new 805 fleet for West Coast Partnership. Since TCMS is an extremely complex and heavily integrated system which sits at the heart of all train functionality, I continually leverage my knowledge of all train systems and functions as well as my skills in systems integration and stakeholder management to help these projects meet their targets.I led the integration of several new critical functions into rolling stock, including selective door operation (SDO) and driver advisory system (DAS). I have a track record of successfully delivering systems, reaching consensus with a wide range of stakeholders across cultures and technical backgrounds against a backdrop of tight deadlines and constantly arising technical challenges.I am a strong advocate of Systems Engineering in Rail and beyond. I am experienced in requirement elicitation and development, functional design, system integration, stakeholder management including suppliers and customers and verification & validation, including the introduction of hardware in the loop (HiL) testing for Hitachi’s TCMS. I championed the creation of Hitachi’s Functional Architecture team in 2023, recommending a member of my team to lead it and continuing to act as mentor as the team’s processes are put in place.I am passionate about good management and I take my responsibilities as a leader, coach and mentor very seriously. In order to solidify and expand my management skill set I am studying a Senior Leader Apprenticeship (MBA). I expect to graduate and achieve Chartered Manager status in 2026.
