ABOUT ALEX MILAN TRACY
Alex is a photojournalist based in Portland, Oregon, working throughout the Pacific Northwest and further afield. For the past eleven years, he has worked as a freelance photographer and videographer, supplying content to publications such as The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, TIME, CNN, National Geographic, The Washington Post, CBS, ABC and NBC. He contributes frequently to SIPA and Associated Press, and also shoots assignments for Anadolu Agency. Passionate about environmental issues, he has provided photographic services for organizations such as The Sierra Club, 350.org, and Columbia Riverkeeper relating to topics surrounding fossil fuel extraction in Oregon and Washington. Alex received a prestigious seed grant from Mercy Corps Northwest to expand his business in 2014. He has been awarded three fellowships from the Institute for Journalism and Natural Resources. One explored conservation issues in 2015 around greater sage grouse in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and Idaho. Another in 2017 documented natural resources and environmental issues in North Dakota’s Prairie Pothole Region. The third in 2019 looked at issues surrounding the proposed Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay, Alaska, home to the most valuable and productive salmon fishery in the United States. At the end of 2017 Alex worked for the Salt Lake City based travel and adventure company Mountain Education and Development (MED) Alliance where he documented a wilderness first responder program and a light and fast expedition in Ecuador, climbing eight mountains in eight days including Illiniza Sur (17,267 ft.) and Chimborazo (20,564 ft.), the closest place to space on Earth. More recently, he lived in Arequipa, Peru for two months to learn Spanish before traveling for another month around Peru and Colombia. He has led and taught National Geographic Student Expeditions photography workshops in London (2014, 2015), Prague (2015, 2016, 2017,2018), Tokyo (2019), as well as an expedition in Iceland (2017).
