ABOUT ALEXIS E. KLAPHEKE

Alexis is a staff attorney for the Jefferson Circuit Court and a recent graduate of the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, having obtained her Juris Doctor magna cum laude in preparation for work in the state judiciary.Alexis is experienced at drafting, serving, and electronically filing pleadings, motions, and discovery requests and responses, as well as assembling corresponding exhibits, for various civil and criminal matters. She has had ample opportunities to assist attorneys with preparations for hearings, motion hours, depositions, oral arguments, and trials in state and federal courts, along with negotiations, mediations, arbitrations, and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. She has experience analyzing appellate briefs, composing bench memoranda, and drafting judicial opinions for civil and criminal cases at the state and federal levels. She has strong writing, editing, and research skills and is knowledgable on issues of grammar, syntax, and the Bluebook citation system. In addition, she is highly proficient in Lexis and Westlaw databases and is skilled at researching complex issues in various areas of law.Alexis graduated summa cum laude from the University of Louisville with three Bachelor of Arts degrees in Philosophy, Latin American and Latino Studies, and Immigration Legal Studies, as well as a minor in Spanish, during which time she completed a Senior Honors Thesis discussing linguistic and cultural training for immigration attorneys representing undocumented Oaxacan immigrants in the United States.Alongside her undergraduate and professional studies, Alexis has acquired valuable legal experience in courts, private firms, and non-profit settings. She has developed qualitative research and interviewing skills in both domestic and international contexts. She has also gained extensive linguistic and cultural knowledge through involved academic study, immersive experiences abroad, and dedicated service to immigrant, refugee, and noncitizen communities in both the United States and Mexico.Alexis has achieved professional working proficiency in Spanish and is skilled in English-Spanish translation and interpreting. Additionally, she is experienced in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL).As an attorney, Alexis is tremendously passionate about utilizing her unique knowledge, skills, and experience to represent clients and courts with legal expertise and cultural competence.
