About Alexandra Gonzalez
I believe public spaces are one of the most powerful tools we have for building equitable, connected communities. When designed with — not just for — the people who use them, public spaces become sites of belonging, collective memory, and cultural identity.I’m the Founding Principal of Hive Public Space, and I’ve spent nearly two decades transforming underutilized and overlooked spaces into environments that are socially and culturally inclusive. My work sits at the intersection of urban design, community engagement, and Design Justice, and I bring that lens to every project, partnership, and conversation. Before founding Hive, I served as Senior Urban Designer at the Bryant Park Corporation and 34th Street Partnership, where I worked on the design, operations, and management of some of New York City’s most iconic public spaces.Beyond my practice, I’m an Obama Leader, a Design Fellow at the Design Trust for Public Space, and a core organizer for Design as Protest. I also serve on my local Community Board CB2 in Queens because equitable public space starts at the neighborhood level. If you’re working on a project, initiative, or story at the intersection of public space, equity, and community, I’d love to connect.
Experience
Founding Principal
Jan 2016 — Present · NY, US
Hive Public Space is an urban design and placemaking practice dedicated to creating public spaces that are socially and culturally inclusive, equitable, and deeply rooted in community identity. As Founding Principal, I lead the full arc of projects from strategic vision through design and implementation, working alongside city agencies, and community organizations to shape the public realm in meaningful ways. Our work spans public plazas and parks, streetscapes and pedestrian corridors, community activation and programming, and policy and planning. At the core of every project is a commitment to Design Justice — centering the voices, needs, and lived experiences of the communities most impacted by the spaces we design. We don’t design for communities. We design with them.
