ABOUT ALEX WONG

As an public health resident and a family physician, I am passionate about bridging clinical care with public health policy. I hope to utilize my skills in clinical medicine, policy development, and quality improvement to contribute to a healthcare system that is more efficient, equitable and accessible. As a physician, I am guided by a desire to improve the patient experience, particularly by addressing health disparities faced by marginalized populations. Hoping to combine this idealism with practicality, I completed my Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) to learn how to reconcile systems-change with the political and economic realities of Canadian healthcare. I am especially interested in integrating social determinants into clinical practice to improve accessibility and quality of care for underserved communities. By combining my passions for medicine, business and social justice, I hope to build a career focused on addressing the issues of inequity and inefficiency our health system is facing. My areas of interest include: substance use disorders and harm reduction, quality improvement, medical education, policy approaches to health equity, primary care, and health tech. I have been recognized for my academic achievement and community involvement as a Peter Lougheed Scholar, a Rutherford Scholar, a Top 30 Under 30 by the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation, and as the inaugural recipient of the Cecil E. Race Leadership Scholarship.
