ABOUT CLINT ALEXANDER

ESSA is a premier partner for organizations that value nature and are committed to achieving positive, durable outcomes. As President of ESSA, I enjoy weaving collaborative interdisciplinary science, Indigenous knowledge and complex data into intuitive decision-support tools and adaptive management plans. I helped pioneer Turn Taking Optimization to resolve seemingly insoluble trade-offs, demonstrating how shifting priorities across years mute the otherwise inescapable reality of ‘Jagger’s Law’. I have also facilitated teams in the Klamath River to set the restoration roadmap for the world’s largest dam removal project and built award-winning real-time decision support tools for the operation of water storage dams in British Columbia. One of Canada’s most enduring and experienced environmental consultancies, ESSA organizes our expertise into three pillars: Strategic Planning & Adaptive Management; Ecosystem Science, Valuation & Analytics; and Collaborative Decision-Making & Engagement. Our core philosophy of valuing nature and integrating these pillars guide our partnerships, drawing us to clients committed to improving environmental outcomes beyond mere regulatory compliance. These clients often face “wicked problems”— situations where the scientific and social stakes are high and stakeholders are deeply divided. As systems thinkers with a commitment to unimpeachable science and the art of managing human dynamics our teams transform conflict into consensus and complexity into clarity. Because of this we often become an indispensable long term strategic partner for organizations facing high-stakes environmental decisions. In my role as a facilitator, I have designed creative processes sensitive to the distinctive nature of highly technical resource management problems and guided clients to contribute their ideas and resolve barriers. I hold a B.Sc. in Ecology and Environmental Biology from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Resource and Environmental Management from Simon Fraser University, supplemented by foundational facilitation training under Charles Holmes. I enjoy collaborating with others, building strategic alliances, untangling problems and clearly communicating trade-offs.
