About Alexander Mericli

I am an Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Director of Clinical Research for MD Anderson’s Department of Plastic Surgery, the largest academic plastic surgery group in the United States. I completed my plastic surgery residency at the University of Virginia, followed by a fellowship in microvascular and reconstructive surgery at MD Anderson. I perform all aspects of reconstructive surgery with particular attention to breast reconstruction, reconstruction after destabilizing extremity, pelvic, and spinal tumor resections, and reconstruction of unusual or particularly challenging/unique defects across the spectrum of human anatomy. I am dedicated to surgical research and education, having received numerous awards in recognition of these endeavors. I have authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and written chapters in all the major plastic surgery textbooks published over the past 9 years. I sit on the editorial board for the journal Annals of Plastic Surgery and I am a lead Editor for Current Surgery Reports. I lecture nationally and internationally on reconstruction after oncologic surgery.I sit on the scientific advisory boards for Abbvie, Inc. and Mentor Worldwide, LLC (J&J Company) helping to innovate breast reconstruction technology. I am originally from Pittsburgh, PA. I received a Bachelor of Science degree – magna cum laude – from Allegheny College, in Meadville, PA, where I studied biology and English. I was awarded my Doctor of Medicine degree – magna cum laude – from Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia, PA, where I was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.
