As an Orbyts Fellow, I design and lead original, research-based projects that engage secondary-school students in authentic scientific inquiry. The role involves translating complex research questions into accessible, well-scoped investigations, mentoring student teams, and supporting teachers to deliver real research experiences in the classroom.I provide academic guidance, experimental design support, and scientific mentoring, while ensuring projects are methodologically sound, safe, and aligned with real-world research practice. Through this role, I contribute to widening participation in STEM and strengthening links between academic research and schools.Key activities include:Designing school-appropriate research projects grounded in active academic researchMentoring students through experimental design, data collection, and analysisSupporting teachers with project structure, resources, and scientific contextDeveloping students’ understanding of research ethics, uncertainty, and evidenceCommunicating scientific results through presentations and written outputsProjects focus on sustainable materials, bio-based composites, and low-carbon construction technologies.
