ABOUT ALEX RUSSELL

My first career out of university, after completing a degree in Live & Studio Sound (the technical side of music production and live set-ups) and an MSc in Global Marketing, was in sales and shortly after an advertising agency working with B2B clients on their digital and print marketing. I was still early in my career at this stage and had been thinking about joining the army for some time so took the leap of faith and commissioned from Sandhurst as an officer, only to realise that I still wanted to be involved in music and set on the path to make this a reality. I had been DJing for years, but had never really thought of it as a career, especially after following such conventional paths (even if they were somewhat unrelated), but decided to take the second leap of faith and set upon the path of becoming a self employed DJ, with the idea of fulfilling a dream I’d had ever since university. After DJing regularly for some time, I started to think about how I missed the buzz of working collaboratively with others to reach a common goal and how I felt like I had more to offer than being a bar/small club DJ. I was working as a bar supervisor on the side until I managed to build enough DJ work to support myself fully without a part-time role, but realised that although my passion for performing would always be there, my talents and interests lead me back to wanting to use my degrees and prior marketing experience in a more conventional setting. Although the experience I have is eclectic and different to most, I feel the combination of having worked within a marketing agency, combined with disciplined nature of the army, holistic understanding of how venues work as an operator in a venue, alongside a deep appreciation for the creative aspect of being a DJ myself, hopefully gives me an unique viewpoint to any new opportunity.
