Awarded a research fellowship under the “AR B N.20/2023” call by Sapienza University of Rome, I was entrusted by the DIET Department with project management responsibilities within Prof. Antonello Rizzi’s research group for a project funded by the EU – NextGenerationEU, as part of the NEST extended partnerships selected by MUR, under the thematic area “Future Energy Scenarios – Green Energy of the Future.” The project focuses on the design of AI-based technological solutions for Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) through algorithms developed at CIPAR-LABS, where I am a team member. The research and development of RECs is inherently multidisciplinary, requiring technical, economic, regulatory, and social expertise. Our work targets both technical and regulatory aspects. Among our goals: the creation of a hierarchical EMS (Energy Management System) platform based on machine learning and predictive models for real-time optimization of energy flows, aiming to maximize shared energy incentives as defined by GSE rules—even when such decisions differ from individual optimization strategies. These rules were decoded from regulatory documents and translated into software code, enabling the EMS to automate decisions in full compliance with GSE guidelines, especially in managing energy sharing and battery storage. The platform is designed to support scenarios where collective benefits prevail over individual optimization. I also contributed to the development of a second AI-based platform that supports REC design by realistically evaluating multiple techno-economic scenarios. It provides break-even analysis based on investment costs, user energy profiles, battery sizing, inverter logic, and incentive schemes. The goal is to foster the energy transition with realistic, data-driven planning tools that support stakeholders, local governments, and energy communities in designing sustainable and replicable models.
