ABOUT ALESSANDRA R. CARREON

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of organizations whose missions align with my passion to accelerate the adoption of equitable solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, including climate change. My interest in climate change stems from my experiences in my parents’ home countries, the Philippines and Italy – in my father’s rural Filipino town, I saw the ecological destruction wrought by climate change and exacerbated by inequitable development; in Italy, I realized that civic disengagement and ineffective policy led to wealth and health disparities. These experiences led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering with a focus on environmental applications and later an MBA.I was able to put my skills to good use at Ford Motor Company where I led sustainability efforts to ensure that the company’s material sourcing was responsible, transparent, and in line with global regulations. At RMI, I led passenger mobility and infrastructure projects to accelerate global transportation electrification, with a focus on developing and implementing strategies to create an equitable EV value chain and advance initiatives to achieve full battery circularity. As an appointed commissioner on Michigan’s Public Service Commission, I embraced my important role as the state’s regulator of investor owned utilities by prioritizing equity, environmental justice, affordability, and engagement in advancing a clean energy future.Today, I am excited to serve in my capacity as chief climate officer for the state’s Office of Climate and Energy to implement our state’s climate plan in pursuit of a decarbonized future, partnering with public and private entities and ensuring every sector sees its role in accomplishing this goal.My equity work is not limited to my \"day\" job: I’m the proud co-founder and co-owner of Detroit\'s first Neapolitan pizzeria, PizzaPlex L3C, whose mission and brick and mortar operation from 20••••23 was to connect people over love of food and celebrate different cultures at affordable prices for all customers. In my work in the food & beverage industry, I see the positive impact of local equity efforts every day.Throughout my sustainability career, I’ve been inspired again and again by the power of partnerships to effect change on a national and international scale. These experiences have given me a sense of informed optimism – the challenges we face are great, but all of us, whether individually or collectively, can help create a fairer, cleaner, and healthier future for everyone.
