ABOUT ALEC HANCOCK

I am a Barrister at Magdalen Chambers in Exeter, with a legal background spanning employed practice, independent consultancy, and self-employed court advocacy. With a specialist waiver from the BSB, I am also allowed to hold my CILEX lawyer practising certificate (so I can wind down my litigation practice). I began my legal career at a Plymouth-based law firm specialising in personal injury, where I trained and qualified as a CILEX Lawyer. I later worked as a self-employed consultant for two separate law firms, providing advocacy and litigation support across a broad range of civil matters. In 2021, I was granted CILEX practice rights, including independent rights to conduct litigation and rights of audience in the county court. I went on to practise as a county court advocate, appearing regularly in open court hearings such as fast-track trials, disposal hearings, and county court appeals. Alongside my advocacy work, I developed a substantial drafting and advisory practice, advising on quantum and preparing pleadings and other court documents. In 2023, I was authorised by the Bar Standards Board to establish a single-person BSB-regulated law firm (AJH Advocacy Limited), focused on the provision of county court advocacy for other law firms. In 2025, I became the first CILEX lawyer to obtain Higher Rights of Audience in civil proceedings after successfully completing the University of Law’s Higher Rights of Audience assessment. I subsequently transferred to the Bar and was called in July 2025 at Lincoln’s Inn. I was then granted a full pupillage dispensation by the BSB and joined Magdalen Chambers. With over ten years of litigation experience, I specialise in personal injury cases (RTA/EL/PL/OL) and civil costs issues, especially fixed recoverable costs and disbursement disputes. For instructions on matters on or after 12th January 2026, please contact Magdalen Chambers via c•••••@magdalenchambers.co.uk or by telephone on 01•••••••00.
