ABOUT ALDIJANA ŠIŠIĆ

With over 30 years of work in the area of human rights, and specifically women’s rights, I have diverse and longstanding experience in strategic leadership, human rights advocacy and resource mobilization. In September 2021 I have taken a new position as the Chief of the Private Sector Partnerships in UN Women. For over 8 years I was the Chief of the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. Established in 1996 by United Nations General Assembly resolution 50/166, the UN Trust Fund was the first and, thus far remains the only, global, multilateral grant-giving fund specialized in preventing and ending all forms of violence against women and girls. Under my leadership, just between 2016 and 2021, the UN Trust Fund disbursed over USD 82 million to organizations around the world that are working to prevent and end VAW/G. Its current portfolio covers projects in 61 countries with grants to a total value of USD 60 million. Prior to my joining the United Nations in January 2009, I worked for 15 years at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International (AI) in London (United Kingdom) as well as AI New Zealand in Wellington as an advocacy and human rights specialist, coordinator and manager where I led the development and implementation of national, regional and international strategies and campaigns on a range of human rights issues including women’s, children’s, refugee and migrants’ rights, torture and the death penalty. In my native Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina, I worked as a teacher and journalist. After finishing my Ph.D. in 1997 at the University of London I pursued career as a human rights advocate and practitioner.
