Screen potential clients referred to the Rapid Response Initiative (RRI) to assess eligibility factors such as imminent age outs, post removal order, ICE detention, family separation due to DHS enforcement, and HSI wellness checks. Respond quickly to RRI clients’ needs by interviewing clients, drafting affidavits, drafting motions for EOIR, drafting age-out custody briefs for Family Court, assembling evidence, and connecting clients with social services. Research and propose arguments against mandatory detention of previously designated Unaccompanied Children. Advocate for increased funding in the NJ State Budget by calling legislators and editing press releases. Collect data on school enrollment policies to track immigrant children’s access to education across NJ.

ABOUT ALBERTA BORN-WEISS
After graduating from Wellesley College with a degree in Peace and Justice Studies, I narrowed my focus to immigrant justice on the border, applying the theoretical frameworks regarding structural violence to my work with detained immigrant children in Office of Refugee Resettlement custody. The methodologies I learned at Wellesley, as well as perspective I gained during a cumulative year-long stay in Buenos Aires and Havana, converge to inform my advocacy both in and outside of detention centers. In addition to providing legal orientations and interviewing unaccompanied minors, I also volunteer every weekend at a local bus stop where ICE and Border Patrol release immigrants post-detention. There, I orient new volunteers, assemble supplies, and distribute humanitarian aid (hygiene kits, blankets, food, diapers, etc). My almost 2 years of experience with newly-arrived immigrant children and adults have shown me the necessity of access to information for emotional wellbeing as people of all ages navigate removal proceedings. I hope to attend law school in 2023, to better equip myself as a resource and advocate.
