ABOUT ALBA VICTORIA ZAMARBIDE URDANIZ
Alba Zamarbide, Doctor of Architecture (Waseda University, Japan), integrates participatory design methods into strategic planning at multiple scales—from building and street interventions to urban strategies and heritage value assessment and management—with a focus on historic areas in southern Europe and the Global South. Her research centres on the notion of boundary—physical, managerial, and theoretical—adopted by different stakeholders, and how these boundaries shape architecture, heritage, and place in the 21st century. In 2018, she received the European Research Award on Cultural Policy and Management, which led to a monograph in the ENCATC Book Series (2019). From 2019 to 2022, she coordinated the World Heritage Cities Programme at the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, overseeing the implementation of the 2011 Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL). Since 2023, she has coordinated the management of the Fortifications of Vauban serial World Heritage site, alongside ongoing independent research, awareness-raising, and educational initiatives.
