About Alan Johnston

Alan Johnston has over 40 years of information architecture, systems analysis, systems integration, and software development experience, with a special focus on Interoperability and Digital Transformation for Life-cycle Asset Management and Critical Infrastructure Management. He has led many enterprise integration projects in asset intensive industries and was contracted as a Program Manager VII at the US Army Aviation and Missile Research Design and Engineering Center Software Engineering Directorate at Redstone Arsenal for 6 years. Alan has also been part of the formation of 3 business organizations, serving as a director, general manager, and president and also being VP-Technology for TSW International. In 1985. Alan founded Communix Corporation as a Value Added Reseller (VAR) for both AT & T Unix System V hardware and software, adding Novell NetWare and related LAN hardware in 1986. Communix developed, implemented, and supported industrial software solutions for manufacturing shop floor management. In 1986, they began focusing on Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems, establishing part of Alan’s career focus. Communix was merged with TSW International in 1995 as part of a larger merger led by Warburg Pincus which consolidated several parts of the EAM solutions industry into Indus International.Starting in 1993, Alan helped form the Machinery Information Management Open Systems Alliance (MIMOSA), which formally organized as a 501 (c) 6 in 1997. Standards-based interoperability for related Systems of Systems has become another career focus, resulting in Alan also becoming part of the US U.S. TECHNICAL ADVISORY GROUP for the combined ANSI/TAG to ISO/TC 184/SC 5 & SC 4 and international standardization work (ISO & IEC). In 2004, Alan founded Assetricity, LLC with a focus on standards-based interoperability for Asset Lifecycle Management and became a support contractor for the US Army Aviation and Missile Research, Design, and Engineering Center Software Engineering Directorate at Redstone Arsenal. To help enable standards-based interoperability as a rational alternative to the status quo of proprietary ecosystems of industrial software and systems Alan has subsequently led Assetricity to develop pure implementations of the OIIE Primary Component specifications that are published by MIMOSA and OpenO & M. Alan currently serves as MIMOSA President, a voting member of the ISA95 Committee and Convenor of ISO TC 184/WG 6, with the Scope of Asset Intensive Industry Interoperability.
