ABOUT ALAN WALSH

Currently, I\'m a Principal Economist at the Bank of Canada. My areas of interest include financial market efficiency and stability. In this role, I have:• Served as Canada\'s representative to the Non-Bank Monitoring Experts\' Group at the Financial Stability Board• Acted as associate editor of the Financial System Review, the Bank\'s flagship publication on financial stability• Co-authored a report on Non-Bank Financial Intermediation in CanadaFor my PhD at Cambridge, I researched economic networks: the links that connect individuals or firms. I researched how these links form, and how different linking structures affect decision-making processes. During the course of my PhD, I:• Published my working paper,\'Games on Multi-Layer Networks,’ to Cambridge Working Papers in Economics• Presented my chapter, ‘Cournot Intermediation Chains,’ to the 24th Coalition Theory Network Conference, one of the largest international conferences in my field• Supervised about 15 students each year as the appointed Teaching Fellow for the undergraduate course ‘Economic Theory and Analysis,’In my previous career, I worked as a proprietary trader for RBC Capital Markets in Toronto. In this role I:• Served as the TSX Registered Trader for more than 50 ETFs; provided market stability and two-sided liquidity• Designed, tested, and deployed new algorithms for faster trading and more intelligent hedging to compete against constantly increasing number of high-frequency trading firms in our market• Developed new front office pricing and P&L tracking platform, reducing data usage by 90%, saving 2 hours of labour per day, and drastically increasing new product extensibility
