Alan N. Carlson, M.D, loves caring for patients. That is only one of the reasons why he is recognized by his colleagues, peers in his field, and the vast medical community as a leading eye surgeon specializing in surgical procedures related to cataracts, corneal transplantation, and laser vision correction. Coming to Duke in 1974, he earned both his medical and undergraduate degrees from Duke University, with Summa Cum Laude graduation honors. After completing his residency at the Cullen Eye Institute, he successfully completed two separate fellowships in Corneal and Refractive surgery. Serving as residency program director and Chief of the Corneal Service at the Medical University of South Carolina for 8 years, he was recruited back to Duke in 1996 where he continues to serve as a full-time faculty member of the Duke Eye Center as Professor of Ophthalmology and Chief of the Corneal and Refractive Surgery Service. He was selected among the top 6 refractive surgeons in university environments and is an active member in over a dozen professional societies and one of the most experienced anterior segment surgeons in the country having performed over successful surgical procedures in his ophthalmic career.
