RB is a FTSE top 20 company with factories manufacturing Healthcare, Nutrition and Hygiene products around the world. I lead the manufacturing aspects of existing product development, production site transfers and new product launches across RB’s Nutrition manufacturing network. We have a diverse range of products and technologies used to manufacture infant formula and adult nutritional products Each RB manufacturing site has a technical team made up of scientists and engineers. We work across the RB functions and partner with commercial, R&D and regulatory teams to ensure each project is delivered to plan. I strongly believe in developing our talented people within the global technical team. Over the last year alone 15 people have been promoted within their manufacturing site or have moved to another RB site in another country to continue their career development. We manufacture complex products within highly regulated categories. As such a significant part of the work we do is to keep our products up to date with the changing external environment. That might mean qualifying new sources of raw materials, improving the capability of our manufacturing process to meet changing regulations or bringing new technology to the way we manufacture our products. One key element of our work is to move production from one manufacturing site to another. I developed our first technology transfer process when I joined RB and we use an updated version of this today to ensure that each site team develops a very detailed understanding of the product formulations, method of manufacture, chemical specifications, raw materials, product chemical stability and analytical methods for the product they are receiving.Another key element is successful industrialisation and start-up of our new product launches. RB has been recognised for its strong innovations and that means managing multiple launches at the same time across the world.

ABOUT ALAN CLARK

During my career I’ve worked within manufacturing support for a wide range of products. Most of my experience has been in the technology transfer and routine manufacture of pharmaceutical products. Today I’m responsible for technical support of RB’s Nutrition factories around the globe. The product portfolio is very broad across a range of infant formula and adult nutritional products. I lead a team of 100 graduate scientists and engineers in 8 different locations. Our main responsibilities include • Technology transfer of formulations from the laboratory into first production or from one manufacturing site to another• Developing and implementing our raw materials or finished product sourcing strategies• Ongoing manufacturing support such as process validation and product change management• Manufacturing troubleshooting and improvement projects These responsibilities can’t be achieved within manufacturing alone and so require close collaboration with RB’s regulatory, R&D and commercial teams. The manufacturing technical team works closely with the RB quality team in all aspects of our work. We are well integrated and that helped me personally when I decided to study to become a QP for medicinal products. I passed my Viva in 2017 and I’m eligible to act as a QP. I’ve gained a lot from working in a broad technical role. I’m pleased to say I continue to learn every day and I enjoy the differences that each country and each product type bring.Personally, I hold degrees in Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Quality management. I’m a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institution of Chemical Engineers
