ABOUT ALAN ALSOP

I am a Chartered Health, Safety and Environmental leader (CMIOSH) with over a decade of safety management experience across complex construction and infrastructure projects. I specialise in shaping strategy, developing teams, and delivering measurable risk reduction that supports operational and commercial performance.Currently a Senior Advisor at Galliford Try within the Severn Trent Water framework, I provide leadership across high-risk activities including water treatment, tunnelling, deep excavations, confined spaces, lifting operations and M&E installations. I lead the business unit’s Service Avoidance Working Group, embedding governance and data led decision making which has contributed to a significant reduction in service damages across the framework.I oversee and mentor a team of three advisors, including supporting a graduate’s progression into an advisor role. My focus is on building capability, aligning workstreams to business priorities, and influencing planning decisions early to ensure risk is effectively managed from pre-construction through delivery.Previously at Miller Homes, I managed health and safety for one of the company’s busiest business units. I directed the service avoidance strategy, strengthening accountability and performance and achieving a sustained reduction in service strikes. I also developed safety KPIs and reported performance at board level, providing senior leaders with clear insight into trends and improvement priorities. In addition, I spearheaded an enhanced silt management approach that was later adopted as a company wide standard.My leadership foundation was built during nine years of military service, including three operational tours of Afghanistan, where I developed decisive leadership, dynamic risk management and resilience under pressure.I am motivated by leading at scale — setting direction, developing people and building systems that deliver sustainable safety and operational excellence.
