About Anne Laforti

I became a soil nerd after cofounding an urban agriculture nonprofit in Chicago, where I discovered the invisible world of soil microbial communities distributing plant nutrients beneath our feet. That curiosity led me to pursue a Master\'s in Biomimicry—I wanted to understand how nature works so I could help restore and regenerate entire ecosystems, starting with the soil.Today, I work as a Biomimic and Project Manager at Biomimicry 3.8, where I translate complex ecological science into practical strategies that corporations, municipalities, and land managers can implement. I help organizations apply nature\'s 3.8 billion years of R&D to solve their toughest challenges.My focus is on the soils we often overlook: urban and suburban landscapes. These might not be growing our food, but they\'re the foundation for climate-resilient cities. Healthy urban soils create sponge cities that manage stormwater, support native plants that sustain our flora, fauna, and funga, reduce heat island effects, and help us adapt to a warming climate. Regenerating these soils is as critical as transforming agricultural land.I approach this work by recognizing deep patterns in nature and learning from Indigenous ecological wisdom. I believe the biggest challenges of our time—changing climate and fractured communities—require us to build regenerative systems rooted in reciprocity across humans, plants, animals, and fungi. My work centers community capacity-building, where solutions emerge from collaboration rather than extraction.I\'m available for biomimicry and bioremediation consulting, workshop facilitation, speaking engagements, and collaborative projects that regenerate soil and water systems.
