Al Strong is a trumpet player, composer, recording artist and educator. He recently performed on two Grammy nominated projects. A cultural innovator, he is the co-founder of the Art of Cool Project, which spawned the original Art of Cool Music Festival in Durham, N.C. and the stArt of Cool youth summer camp.Al Strong is an enthusiastic advocate for the arts in Durham and has been an active participant of the CAPS program as a teaching artist for the past 6 years. He holds a Master’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy from Northern Illinois University, along with an 11-year record of experience as adjunct faculty at North Carolina Central University and other surrounding Universities. He was recently Music Department Chair and music team lead at Sallie B. Howard School For The Arts and Sciences where he designed and implemented a new music curriculum to suit the needs of the newly created high school performing arts division of that school.Al begins his tenure as the Durham Arts Council’s Director of CAPS & Community Arts Partnerships on October 3, 2022. He looks forward to further advancing accessibility for student learning through the arts. In 2022/23 the DAC CAPS program celebrates its 50th anniversary of bringing arts integration programs into school classrooms, summer programs and community sites to enhance learning.
