WORK HISTORY
Principal Engineer (Stream Lead) Zero Occupancy Operations @Oxa
Oxford, GB
I currently lead the Zero Occupancy Operations function for the OxaDriver product. This role focuses on enabling reliable, safe, and efficient driverless operation of autonomous vehicle fleets across diverse domains (e.g, cities, solar farms, ports, airports). My position sits at the complex intersection of: classical robotics, machine learning, control systems, safety engineering, verification & validation, standards & regulations, data science, and system observability. As the Senior Engineering Manager, I manage, mentor, and coach 20+ engineers from graduate to senior levels, ensuring a high-performing, inclusive team with diverse technical, cultural, and gender demographics. After joining this function, I successfully rebuilt and scaled this core function from a size of 14 following a recent reorganisation. As the Principal Engineer, I set the technical direction for the team\'s roadmap and remain hands-on, ensuring technical rigour. This involves leading the design, implementation, and deployment of the safety architecture on Oxa\'s fleet, authoring and reviewing architectural decisions and technical design documents across the autonomy stack, contributing directly to the software engineering effort, including writing and reviewing C++ and Python code. Moreover, using my experience from previous data-centric roles, I create solutions for the efficient use of data to enhance system performance and reliability. We are responsible for architecting and delivering autonomous vehicle components and systems that ensure sufficiently safe, efficient, and reliable driverless operation. This entails developing multi-sensor 4D perception algorithms using a combination of classical robotics and machine learning methods, implementing low-level control systems, and designing verification and validation pipelines for system performance evaluation. This enables us to utilise system outputs for ascertaining compliance with industry-accepted safety standards and regulations.

ABOUT AKSHAY A. MORYE
I am a Principal Engineer and a Senior Engineering Manager at Oxa, driving innovation where robotics, machine learning, systems architecture, observability, and safety converge. I concentrate on achieving robust, real-world system performance that upholds the highest standards of efficiency, integrity, and safety.I currently lead a function of 20+ engineers and managers, a function I rebuilt from an initial headcount of 14. This remit involves managing managers and a highly diverse, multidisciplinary engineering team across technical disciplines such as Robotics, Safety Engineering, Perception, Machine Learning, Data Science, and Control Engineering. This role also involves mentoring talent from early-career through to senior levels and cultivating high-performing technical leadership.Having been involved with Oxa since its early days, I\'ve been integral to the company\'s growth from ∼40 to 430+ people. My contributions span all parts of the business; building high-performing teams from the ground up, scaling technical organisations, pioneering technologies across the autonomy stack, leading system architecture and algorithm development, from Perception & Control to System Observability, Data, and Cloud Infrastructure. With over a decade as a field roboticist, I translate robust theoretical foundations into pragmatic and efficient real-world execution. My work is built on the foundations of my Master of Science (2011) and PhD (2013) degrees in Electrical Engineering (Controls & Robotics) from the University of California, Riverside. My research focused on distributed control of multi-agent systems for active perception. As a Postdoc at the University of Oxford, I developed state of the art multi-sensor systems—from object tracking and prediction systems to automatic lidar-camera calibration methods—and was the Technical Lead responsible for delivering critical projects like Network Rail\'s Asset Detection and the Oxford-Shell Autonomous Urban Concept Vehicle.
