ABOUT AKIRA MONNO
Akira Monno is currently the Director at Deloitte Tohmatsu LLC. He joined Deloitte in February 2024. He specializes in areas of strategic planning, corporate governance, regulatory planning and corporate restructuring. Prior to joining Deloitte, he served as the General Manager of Governance Planning Department for both SMFG and SMBC, with responsibility of overseeing the overseas regulatory engagement of SMBC Group. He was the senior management responsible for the various regulatory / governance enhancement projects in the Americas Division, and also led projects for various European structural change initiatives, including SMBC Group’s preparation for EU IPU Regulation and the proposed Third Country Branch Regulation as part of CRR3/CRD6. During July 2021 to June 2022 when SMBC held the chairmanship of Japan Bankers Association (JBA), he represented the JBA in regulatory engagement with the EU on the Third Country Branch Regulation, including with the European Commission, Member State representatives of the European Council, ECB, and MEPs amongst others. Since February 2022, he headed SMBC Group’s Russia – Ukraine Taskforce, the crisis management team responsible for all matters related to the Ukraine War, reporting directly into SMFG / SMBC Management Committee. Before returning to Tokyo in August 2019, based in London, he was the Managing Director and SMBC Group’s Project Leader for the Group’s Brexit preparation, which involved the establishment of a new European credit institution and a new securities investment firm in Frankfurt, Germany, as well as the regulatory re-licensing process in France. He led all regulatory engagement with the ECB, BaFin, Deutsche Bundesbank, ACPR, and PRA/FCA. SMBC Group’s Brexit preparations all completed in time with the new entities fully operational from 1 April, 2019. During his 11-year assignment in London (20••••19), in his capacity as Managing Director with responsibility of developing SMBC Group’s EMEA strategy, he led the acquisition of the mid-cap LBO business from GE Capital (2015) and was in charge of the post-merger integration project of RBS Aviation Capital (2014). He was also responsible for developing and executing various footprint strategies in EMEA, which included opening new offices in Dublin, Madrid, Prague, Istanbul, and Abu Dhabi. He has held various senior management roles in front office functions as well, including the Western European corporate coverage, EMEA’s emerging market corporate coverage, aircraft & shipping finance, and heading up leasing operations in EMEA.
