ABOUT ABHILASH ABHI KANTAMNENI
My work is guided by a mantra borrowed from my (then) 8-year-old niece: “I have ideas. Of course some are goofy, but there are issues and I want to try.”I take a people-focused, data-driven “action research” approach to shifting public policy. That means embedding myself in the communities at the heart of the systems I’m trying to understand. This work takes me from riding along in vans with contractors, working as a helper on job sites, to showing up at policy tables and speaking at national conferences.This approach has earned wide recognition, including being named a 40 Under 40 Energy Leader by Midwest Energy News and receiving a Canada Storyteller Award from SSHRC. I think home is a habit, and belonging is a practice - so I use my goofy hobbies to \'belong\' to places I\'ve been lucky to call home, earning nicknames like “Michigan Energy-Data Guy” and “Guelph Maps Guy.”, among others.In an earlier academic life, I modeled power system operations (B.E. Electrical Engineering), tracked night-sky transients (M.S. Physics), developed AI algorithms for smart microgrids (M.S. Computer Science), and led a coalition of social-impact organizations in Houghton, MI, into the finals of a national community energy competition.
