ABOUT ASHIK JAHAN GALIB
Experienced marine conservation practitioner and science storyteller with a focus on marine policy development and evidence-based governance for sustainable fisheries and biodiversity. My work was instrumental in the establishment of a national network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), encompassing the full process from identifying critical marine habitats through research, developing the technical proposal, and leading the subsequent advocacy for government endorsement. I also successfully coordinated cross-border collaborations to counter illegal trafficking of CITES-listed marine species in the Bay of Bengal. My core expertise is built upon Strategic Program Design, where I pioneered the use of citizen science networks (35+ fishers and community members) for expanded data collection and introduced community-led SMART monitoring to improve MPA enforcement. Furthermore, I excel in Policy Implementation (CITES/CMS) by translating research into actionable policy recommendations, including developing national conservation strategies, national plan of actions, and Non-Detrimental Findings (NDFs) for threatened sharks and rays, all while effectively leading Stakeholder Engagement consultations to resolve conflicts between conservation and fishing livelihoods. I am committed to bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and impactful, governed conservation action. Currently pursuing a Master of Science in Coastal Science and Policy at UC Santa Cruz.#MarinePolicy #MPAManagement #SustainableFisheries #CITES #ScienceStorytelling #WildlifeConservation #ConservationPolicy #Biodiversity
