About Ajay Garg
Dr. Ajay K. Garg received his Ph.D. degree in Plant Sciences (Plant Molecular Biology & Biotechnology) from the University of Hyderabad. Subsequently, he joined Cornell University in the year 1996 and has made outstanding contributions in genetic engineering of plants, transgenic technology and functional genomics and published important research articles on the production of useful transgenic crop plants. He is an Inventor of several international patent applications. Dr. Garg’s innovative research goal is to improve abiotic stress tolerance into crop plants to enable higher yields and to drive sustainable agricultural production. Our research work (Garg et al. 2002, PNAS 99:15••••••03) was covered globally by the news media including CNN, ABC, BBC, CBC, and CBS (Google scholar shows more than 1824 citations of this paper). Articles related to this work were published in National Geographic, Scientific American, Nature Biotechnology, Science Online, Trends in Plant Science, Associated Press, Reuters, United Press International, The New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times, Los Angeles Times, The Times (London), and The Japan Times. Dr. Garg also established strong international collaboration and trained many scientists from different countries. He extensively fostered international cooperation, goodwill and shared his knowledge and experience with policy makers for the benefit of mankind. US Patent No. Method for increasing resistance of monocot plants against abiotic stresses, TPSP fusion enzyme gene constructs and transformants. AK, Kim JK, Owens TG, Ranwala AP, Choi YD, Kochian LV and Wu RJ (2002) Trehalose accumulation in rice plants confers high tolerance levels to different abiotic stresses. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 99:15••••••••11, he joined UAE University as an Associate Professor of Plant Biotechnology and later as a Research Professor at Khalifa Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (KCGEB). He is a member of International Association for Plant Biotechnology, American Society of Plant Biologists and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
