I grew up in South Africa, surrounded by the rich and the poor living next to one another, poverty was so normalized that I couldn’t truly see it. It was only years later and after moving to the United States and returning home several times a year that the reality hit me with a force I couldn’t ignore. Distance didn’t dull the truth. It revealed it.On one trip, I visited two families living in a squatter camp. One mother told me how her young daughter had been raped on her way to the community toilet (one of only five toilets for 500 people) in the middle of the night. On the same day, I stepped into a small shack where a grandmother, her two daughters, and four grandchildren under ten shared a single room. None of the adults had work. And the children didn’t attend school because even walking to the bus stop was too dangerous. Those moments stayed with me. They still do. As a pastor for many years, I witnessed the quiet power of upliftment long before Rebuild-Africa existed. I saw children who were too weak to play slowly regain energy after receiving proper nutrition. I learned how stunting, once it takes root, is almost impossible to reverse. And I realized something simple but life-changing: transformation always begins with nourishment, then education, and finally opportunity.Today, that belief fuels my mission. We now help feed children every single day across South Africa in kindergartens, daycare centers, and early childhood development programs. The meals are not just food; they’re motivation. They give exhausted parents a reason to send their children to safe spaces where learning and hope can grow. But this is only the beginning. Rebuild-Africa is active in four major regions, working to build a comprehensive system of support from nutrition for babies and moms, to education, to skills development, to job creation. My vision is to help create a pathway where children born into the harshest conditions can rise, build, and rewrite their futures. I’ve learned that sometimes you need distance to finally see what’s right in front of you. And once you see it, you can’t turn away. Not when you know that hope is possible and that it begins with a single meal, a single chance, a single life being rebuild.
