I nearly died that day.What was your Apgar score when you were born? The Apgar score is determined by evaluating a newborn baby on five simple criteria (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration) on a scale from zero to two, then summing up the five values obtained. Resulting score ranges from zero to 10.At birth, my Apgar score was one (1)! That means I was either just breathing but no heartbeat or had a slight heartbeat but not breathing. Either way it was not good! Two years later, I am on a 10-hour plane trip with my parents and siblings, walking up and down the aisle talking to all the passengers. How did that happen? With a level of tenacity, strength, and resilience!Through the chapters of my life, I have learned to develop those qualities into strengths. In 2008, I was afforded the opportunity to move from South Africa to the USA. At the time I was a single mom with two daughters, 5yrs and 9yrs old. I grabbed that opportunity with both hands and have never looked back. You don’t know unless you try! I firmly believe that our attitudes impact the outcomes. With a positive outlook and the determination to succeed, I believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to. Heck! I have even completed a triathlon!I strive to make a difference in people’s lives, no matter how big or small that difference may be. Everybody has a story, and I am curious to learn about others.Despite barely surviving at birth, I am proud of who I am, how far I have come and immensely proud of the beautiful daughters I have raised.
