Diamond Light Source houses the UK’s synchrotron, one of the world\'s most advanced scientific facilities for research and innovation. It produces beams of extreme intensity to probe the structure and composition of matter, from viruses and vaccines to alternative energy solutions and nanotechnology. I work alongside scientists to develop innovative and robust solutions for scientific research.Our software systems facilitate operations at all levels, including the low-level control of hardware, exploiting advanced controls methodologies, the planning, execution and monitoring of experiments, and data processing and visualisation.Our Controls Group deliver a distributed, heterogeneous computing environment for direct control of the instrumentation using the EPICS toolkit, an open-source SCADA framework. A wide range of technical domains are implemented such as motion control, embedded systems, robotics, and automation, as well as data acquisition. The development and support of these systems includes tasks like requirements gathering, software design, development, documentation, and commissioning new solutions.This diverse stack is implemented with a range of technologies such as C, C++ and Python software development on Linux and real-time OS, Containers and Kubernetes, Continuous integration and deployment, Hardware triggered synchronisation using FPGAs, Scan sequencing logic, High speed detector support, Robot kinematics and route planning, and Machine Learning.
