ABOUT AHIELA WATSON
My foundational goal in service is to build trusting rapport with families and individuals who most appreciate being understood for their being as a whole, their heritage, their language, and their journeys. With a social justice advocacy background, my theoretical approach is a combination of person-centered therapy, mindfulness, and liberation psychology in order to support clients facing chronic stress and anxiety, systemic oppression, posttraumatic stress disorder, ADHD, and anger management.I earned both a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology on a Bilingual Latinx Track and Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University, Teachers College. I completed my bachelor’s degree in psychology at Clark University, with a Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies concentration. I continue to sharpen my abilities to center racial and social justice to grasp the unique experiences of marginalized clients as a whole. I have worked within a wide range of services applying psychoeducation, career preparation, socio-emotional learning and psychotherapy. Due to barriers beyond an individual’s control, mental hygiene becomes challenging to achieve for those of marginalized identities; working in communities throughout Harlem and the South Bronx furthered skillset to address and navigate those barriers. I keep a safe space by being supportive, finding moments of joy and laughter, and uplifting clients to achieving goals that were created with the intention to heal and live harmoniously within ourselves and our community.
