ABOUT ANDREA HEMMERICH

I am committed to working with people who share knowledge and discovery to drive social impact. I believe that creating inclusive team settings that keep people\'s aspirations at the core of our work leads to insightful learning and valuable outcomes. Over the last two decades I have participated in ventures spanning geographic and cultural boundaries across design, engineering, health, education, and international development fields.GLOBAL HEALTH & ENGINEERING* International research partnerships with clinicians (obstetricians, midwives, physiotherapists, orthopaedic surgeons) to understand human movement mechanics and behaviours with applications in appropriate technology design and medical intervention strategies {e.g. cultural implications of joint implant design and childbirth biomechanics, India}* Cross-cultural, community field work for water, sanitation, & hygiene (WASH) projects {e.g. gravity-fed water system design, rural Uganda; Gates Foundation Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, Bangladesh}* Capacity building and professional development activities in developing countries to grow culturally relevant expertise and improve access to required resources {e.g. strategic planning with educators in Tanzania and Brazil supported by the ISB}STEM & DESIGN EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES* Interdisciplinary curriculum design to provide insight on how tools such as Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) may be integrated with sustainable, social innovation strategies to address people\'s needs {e.g. Up4 The Challenge}* Inclusive approach to expand engagement of under-represented audiences including women and minorities {e.g. engineering, biomechanics education and outreach with primary, secondary, and post-secondary students both in Canada and globally}* Cooperation with academic and community partners to design for social impact and create meaningful experiences for all participants {e.g. WISE, Parkdale Food Centre, Evergreen & Canadian Design Network}
