I have worked both as a standard substitute teacher all around the Rogue Valley and as a long-term. dedicated building sub for Eagle Point Middle School. One thing that was unique about being the long term building sub is that I was able to observe and teach all of the students in the entire school within the first few months. For example, I saw how students who struggled with behaviors in one class would turn out to be quite helpful in P.E. or Music. I could share this with various teachers in an unusual feedback loop which included my integrated view of certain students. As most teachers only knew their own students well, this also created more of a community amongst our staff and students as I would be a familiar face filling in, and I had the leverage of knowing the students and their tendencies, as well as effective ways to use disciplinary measures (such as having communication with their coaches if they were on a sports team).
