About Adrienne Storey
As a teenager, I fell in love with a place in far northwestern California - a place referred to as \"the river\" by those who live there. In college I studied that place every way I could, spending much of my time at the campus libraries building bibliographies of regional literature. When I realized that the people who lived on \"the river\" did not have access to the literature I did at my college, I wanted to solve that problem and secured grant funding to develop a special library for river residents focused on regional literature. That very first project inspired me to go to library school, and taught me skills that are still central to my work - assessing and meeting end user needs, visioning solutions, project planning and management, information architecture, and information access. In the fifteen years since, I have had wonderful opportunities to apply those skills in different ways. I established a university-hosted research service for small businesses, developed two library branches and a digital library, archives and museum for a Native American tribe, designed back-end architecture and complex taxonomies for a digital library and a DAM system, and processed and managed analog and digital archival collections. In all of these cases, I was driven to meet the needs of communities and collaborated with end users to create systems that worked for them. I have also gained experience over the years related to the relationship between mainstream institutions and underserved communities. I continue to interrogate my own relationship to social oppressions, and center social justice in my work.
