Repertoire:\"Écorché: A Character Study\": An écorché is a sketch of the human body without its overlying skin. Emerging from this Renaissance practice is the notion that to capture the form of the subject, the artist must look inward and past the illusive outer shell. “Écorché” explores how the dancers perform aspects of themselves in public spaces– such as through embodying femininity– as a means to construct this outer facade. The movement also considers how our performances embody larger oppressive systems. At the beginning of the rehearsal process, the dancers were asked to describe the characters they perform in order to seek acceptance. Each of their thoughtful answers were used to create the solos and various movement motifs.\"Faraway Engine\"(Scene I: Sunrise at the Mouth of the River & Scene II: The Arrival): “Faraway engine” is a prompt from Gaga to experiment in how we can move, for instance, a hand or a foot, using muscles from a remote part of the body. It asks us several questions: what and what moves us? How far? How close?An ode to my family, Faraway Engine is about the inheritance of the momentum of displacement. Yet, it is an acknowledgement that community can be recreated anywhere. This is an experiment in what it means to create Asian-American art: art that doesn\'t co-opt the trauma of our ancestors’ migrations, but art that depicts, embodies, confronts, processes, and interacts with our feeling of being torn and re-sewn at the seams.\"Running on Fumes\": “Running On Fumes” is an investigation into dance as confession—one that is stumbling, imperfect, yet earnest— all unfolding from a place of tactility. Using contact and variations on central movement phrases, the dancers make physical the stifling and suffocating urge toward verbal self-revision out of a desire to create a secret world with one another. This piece navigates the beauty of intimacy as well as insularity: each other, and ourselves, are all that we have in this little life.
