About Aditya Kalyanpur
AI Research scientist and engineer with over 20 years of experience in natural language processing, machine learning / deep learning, and symbolic reasoning, with a proven track record of translating AI research into products. I enjoy leading AI teams to solve challenging business problems and doing technical hands-on work as well.Currently, I am a Principal Applied Scientist at AWS AI, and part of the team that is building the Amazon Quick Suite: I was a founding member of the enterprise AI startup Elemental Cognition where I led AI research and development. The main research and application areas included Symbolic-RAG (hybrid retrieval-reader approach that combines embeddings with extracted knowledge structures), LLM-based code-generation to write declarative code / logic programs from NL specifications, and LLM-tool integration, where the tools include specialized reasoning engines/solvers for formal reasoning, planning and constraint solving. Prior to that, I was a core-member of the research tech team that built the IBM Watson QA system that won the Jeopardy! challenge. After Watson\'s landmark win, I helped commercialize the DeepQA technology in the medical and insurance domains, before joining the hedge-fund Bridgewater Associates to work on fundamental neuro-symbolic NLP research, combining lessons learned from working in statistical NLP (Watson) with formal logic and automated reasoning (Phd area). Bridgewater spun-off our research team into the startup Elemental Cognition.
