I think of Supply Chain Management as where the rubber meets the road. Most of the businesses are focused on what happens inside the Ivory Tower. Marketing is all about branding and selling, finance is largely revolves around money, HR is focused on building teams and finding the right people, and MIS is centered upon the power of data and information; whereas supply Chain is focused on moving parts and trying to make things better. What excites me about supply chain management is the impact this function has on business performance, economy, our lives and the planet. For me, supply chain optimization, eliminating waste and losses and thus, reducing costs just comes naturally. It’s like being an ER doctor versus developing the next cure for cancer. SCM people are always next to the sick patient’s bed.The lines between manufacturing, supply chain services, and retail are increasingly blurring. The supply chain and the value chain are basically inseparable. I think of modern manufacturing as the “magic conveyor belt” and supply chain as the new retail.Without global supply chain, modern life and production would not have been possible. I feel I am bettering my workplace every passing day by making the supply chain ecosystem more efficient and resilient.
