ABOUT ADAM SMITH

Adam is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales, a member of the Academy of Experts and a qualified mediator. He is a Director on the Forensic Accounting and Valuations (“FAVS”) team at BDO LLP. He has undertaken forensic accounting assignments since 1996 and has given expert evidence including three appearances in 2020/2021 with two being held remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic. Adam’s projects are split between disputes and fraud investigations. BDO’s FAVS team across the UK is one of the most highly regarded set of forensic accounting professionals. Recent experience includes: Disputes: Acting in a number of shareholder/business partner disputes where business relationships have broken down and the parties need to understand their position and the value of any shareholdings along with investigating the books and records of the business. Acting for a number of banks in numerous claims arising out of alleged interest rate hedging mis-selling. Assisting parties, going through Expert Determinations, with submissions where it is vital that those submissions are as clear and accurate as possible in respect of accounting information and understanding. Acting in a case, including oral expert evidence, involving the interpretation of accounting standards and how public sector entities account for particular transactions. Providing advice in warranty claims for purchasers of businesses. Undertaking valuations of businesses/shareholdings in other contentious matters. Loss of profit disputes due to contract terminations and for other reasons. Investigations: Leading an investigation into significant bribes being paid by a CEO to secure sales from customers. Investigating the actions of an employee within a public sector body who was seeking to defraud the organisation. Investigating directors’ actions particularly in relation to accounting and finance issues. Investigating the actions of a company accountant who was producing misleading financial statements for the owners of the businesses. Undertaking whistle-blowing investigations where confidentiality is key and a discrete investigation is warranted. Advising on the accounting treatment of inter-company and directors’ loans in a family company. Adam is always willing to discuss potential matters on a no-obligation and/or no-names basis. He always take a pragmatic approach to issues and seeks to provide clients with exceptional client service.
