Ever since I first stepped into my classroom as a TeachFirst graduate almost a decade ago, I have battled to answer the same age-old question from students: “when will I actually use this in real life!”. In order to finally have the opportunity to give the students the answer they deserve. Espire was born!I have taught in a student, ‘special measures’, inner city state comprehensive and a rural private school consisting of 250 students. Yet both experience similar problems, with students under-serviced and uninspired by the current approaches to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths – STEM.Our mission is to create environments, programmes of study, and learning experiences, that bring together meaningful academic rigor with the excitement of practical application, all delivered using the latest educational technology.Having witnessed the widespread decline of lessons such as: “resistant materials” or “wood work”, we feel that the Espire programme of study is the modern equivalent to fill this space. The course’s central pillar is practical application. Created not as an escape from the academic routes, but instead designed to actively support the students when they return to them.To truly engage and motivate the next generation of engineers, scientists and tech entrepreneurs we need to overhaul the way we design, deliver and teach STEM.
