1. Optical Coating Engineer

   Coherent Corp.

   Mar 2021 — Present

   The company, Coherent Corp. makes Optical coatings for telecom/5G technology ( & 100G, 50G optical filters) and for Life sciences equipment including PCR instrumentation (Covid-19). I work on: 1) Anti Reflective coatings, using multi cathode magnetron sputtering. Upgrading from single to multi pocket AR chambers to increase production capacity. 2) Process improvement by performing data analysis using Python- I created an interface between Python and SQL, that allows the engineering team to process large amounts of data to better understand the manufacturing of thin films. 3) I wrote Python programs that can substitute for TFCalc simulations. This involved intensive matrix multiplications and organized data structures. By having custom tools built, we can save many repetitive hours performing analysis on TFCalc. Once implemented, nearly every coating can be analyzed and compared with theory and optimal parameters and offsets are automatically generated. 4) R&D- Creating Monte Carlo simulations for risk analysis and to better identify failure points in production All are in progress but some of the daily tasks include: 1) Installing/troubleshooting custom optical systems in magnetron sputtered chambers 2) Heavy regression analysis, sin curve fitting, modeling theoretical optical traces- Improving machine\'s predictive modeling of data based off of which coating moves from one layer to the next - Studying noise and the impact of external factors in an optical system on accuracy of the coating process. 3) Building/improving automated tools to process live/past data. Example: Optical thickness, layer time variation, all live chamber data 4) Failure analysis - cathode issues, arcing, voltage stability. TFCalc (intro skills) to understand deviation from theory
