In June 2014, my mother suffered a cardiac event unable to communicate it was my father who noticed the signs she was exhibiting. We as a family had no idea the staggering statistics associated with heart events and women. Every 80 second a women dies from cardiovascular disease(CVD), yet, 80 percent of CVD may be preventable. The American Heart Association\'s Go Red for Women movement is the trusted, passionate, relevant force for change to eradicate heart disease and stroke in women all over the world. In Alaska, 90% of women who attend Go Red will make one significant life change because of something she learned at the event. That is a strong resolve to this amazing movements resolve for all women to make a commitment to stand together with us and take charge of their heart health. That is why we need your help now. We need to educate key decision makers and the public about Get Your Numbers: Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. Own Your Lifestyle: Stop smoking, lose weight, be physically active and eat healthy. Raise Your Voice: Advocate for more women-related research and education. Educate Your Family: Make healthy food choices; teach kids the importance of staying active. Donate: Show your support with a donation of time or money. I am honored to serve the community of Anchorage to help secure additional education and funding that will impact our mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers heart health for generations to come.
