   I am currently a substitute teacher for various schools within Butte County. In this profession, calm and quiet days are rare, which constantly keeps me on my toes. Being a substitute teacher requires adaptability, resourcefulness, and the ability to make the most of the resources available.It’s not just the students that keep you on your toes—the people you work with can also present unexpected challenges, requiring flexibility and readiness for anything. For example, you might be reassigned to another classroom at a moment’s notice, requiring you to adjust your planning, scheduling, and quickly build an understanding of the new classroom dynamics. As a substitute, planning, coordinating, and understanding are essential. You must interpret and implement the sub plans left by the teacher, carefully mapping out your day to align with their expectations. Flexibility and adaptability are equally important. Lessons don’t always go as planned, and knowing when to pivot or make changes on the fly is a crucial skill in education.Teachers make roughly 1,500 decisions in a single day, most of which are not for ourselves but for our students. This requires critical thinking and strong decision-making skills—important tools for navigating the complexities of the classroom. We must constantly evaluate what the right decisions are for our students and guide them in the direction that will best support their growth, sometimes making tough choices on their behalf.
