About Abid Arcot

I\'m a Software Firmware Engineer with a strong foundation in firmware development, I seamlessly blend my educational pursuits with practical experience, currently working at Generac Clean Energy developing Generac PowerCell2. Prior to my master\'s program, I worked at Hewlett Packard, where I led and managed the development, testing, and maintenance of IO modules. Proficient in languages like Java, JavaScript, C/C++, and Python, I excel in crafting intricate applications and optimizing performance. Additionally, my coursework and projects have sharpened my skills in distributed systems, full stack development, and real-time embedded systems. Furthermore, my undergraduate background in Electronics and Communication Engineering complements my software proficiency. I serve as a conduit between the software and hardware worlds, leveraging my expertise to design hardware using Verilog, synthesize FPGA solutions, and navigate embedded systems intricacies. This integrated perspective allows me to approach problems holistically, ensuring comprehensive and effective solutions.

Experience

  1. Firmware Engineer Ii

    Generac

May 2024 — Present · Reno, NV, US

Contributed to the development of the Generac PowerCell2 product. Implemented UDS routines over CAN in C, enabling the transition from serial communication to a CAN-only interface. Developed Python libraries that abstract UDS DIDs, Firmware update, and other UDS services, simplifying test development for firmware engineers. Streamlined the release process by building a HIL system using CircleCI\'s machine runners, orchestrating nightly regressions and pull request checks, catching critical bugs early. Authored comprehensive Pytest suites for Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and successfully guided a UL auditor through the tests, securing UL 1998 and UL 3141 certifications. Developed firmware (C++) for a HIL machine which uses an AD9959 Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) board to generate sinusoidal signals simulating grid and inverter conditions. Integrated an Arduino for controlling DDS boards and wrote Pytest scripts for different test cases, leveraging a custom serial codec for interfacing Arduino in the tests. Created test plans and mentored fellow firmware engineers in designing scalable test architectures using object-oriented programming (OOP) to ensure broad test coverage. Conducted two learning sessions for engineers on effective test architectures and DevOps practices, focusing on HIL machine automation through CI. Currently developing a SIL system to optimise testing time, reducing dependency on HIL machines for efficiency
