About Abhirup Basu

I\'m Abhirup, a 5th-year PhD candidate in the Chemical Engineering Department department at NC State, advised by Dr. Orlin Velev. I\'m dedicated to solving complex material challenges and bring over seven years of diverse research experience in colloids, nanomaterials, thin films and polymers and surface science.Currently, my NSF-funded project focuses on engineering novel responsive materials that respond to external stimuli. I have designed new colloidal particles with embedded magnetic architectures that can propel, assemble, and reconfigure under magnetic and electric fields. I am also working on understanding the propulsion behavior of these colloidal particles in different types of fluid media, which can enhance our understanding of the fundamental principles of autonomous material dynamics. Additionally, I collaborate on an industry-funded project at NC State, where I study the performance of polymer coatings on aluminum substrates against corrosion. By investigating the structure-property relationships of these coatings via optical and chemical characterization, we aim to elucidate the mechanisms behind their degradation over time. We further collaborate with Dr. Fedkiw\'s group on establishing adhesion and cracking failure of the coatings due to internal stress development via mechanical characterization and electrochemical analysis. I have two years of work experience as a research scientist at Tata Steel Limited India, where I was primarily involved in formulation development for increasing the yield of raw materials. I excel in technical writing and presentations, as manifested by my journal publications, patents, oral and poster presentations, and manuscript reviewing.
