ABOUT ABHIJIT BHATTACHARYYA
Dr.Bhattacharyya is an engineering educator with expertise in teaching, interdicisplinary and collaborative research as well as academic administration acquired over a period of about 16 years in Canada (5 years) and US (11 years). He has a penchant for thinking and seeking solutions outside-the-box, especially within an academic environment. Some of the highlights of his academic career are: 1. Research in the area of smart materials and thin films. He has about 55 journal papers to his credit and about 30 peer-reviewed conference papers. He has published widely in highly prestigious international journals such as Acta Materialia, Thin Solid Films, Journal of Mechanics and Physics of Solids, Smart Materials and Structures. Has received funding from national agencies such as DARPA, Army Research Office, NSF-EPSCOR, DOE to the tune of about $ 1.4 million in the last 10 years.3. Mentored and graduated 5 M.S. students, 5 Ph.D. students. Currently mentoring 2 Ph.D. students.4. Managed an interdisciplinary doctoral program as Graduate coordinator. This program spans the sciences as well as engineering disciplines.5. As Associate Dean, he has a special focus on postgraduate education and research in a college with five departments (in the areas of Engineering and Information Technology.6. Dr.Bhattacharyya participates in the accreditation process of undergraduate programs as a program evaluator for ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).Dr.Bhattacharyya’s goals are to lead efforts1. to decentralize decision making2. to popularize an online-cum-hybrid, quality based approach in teaching of the engineering curriculum3. in developing scalable solutions for bringing quality education in the science and engineering fields to large populations using a mix of information technology tools as well as the all-important “on-campus” college experience. This is especially suitable for countries such as India, China and Brazil.
