ABOUT ABENA BEDIAKO
I graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor’s in English and received my Master’s in Journalism at DePaul University. During my time at the institute I worked as an Associate Editor at 14 East Magazine, where I was tasked with elevating editorial standards through diligent proofreading, editing, and fact-checking for staff writers and contributors — including weekly newsletter sections covering DePaul News, Chicago News, and National News. I also published impactful short-form and long-form news, investigative, and social justice articles. After graduating, I worked as a Civic Reporting Fellow at City Bureau covering the migrant and immigration beat, during which time the city saw an influx of recent arrivals from the southern boarder. I published stories for City Bureau in collaboration with Borderless Magazine. Additionally, I co-organized and hosted a public newsroom focused on a Know Your Labor Rights guide for immigrants and day laborers. My most recent role was a McCarter Fellow at WTTW Chicago Tonight, Chicago’s PBS station. I produced news segments five nights a week covering a wide range of topics, from politics and public health to sports, arts, culture, education, and entertainment, allowing me to adapt to different subject matters and deliver high-quality content.I love storytelling in any capacity and I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to lend my robust background in writing about diverse topics to any publication that aligns with my passions and interests.
