About Abby Katz
Abby Katz is a food studies scholar with mixed-methods research experience focused on food policy, public health, and health equity. She holds a M.A. in Food Studies from New York University, and a B.A. in Food, Culture, & Sustainable Society (Individualized) and Human Rights from the University of Connecticut. She is currently a 4th year PhD candidate in Behavioral and Social Health Sciences at Brown University School of Public Health.Abby is a critical thinker interested in how historical and cultural factors inform food choice and associated health outcomes/disparities especially among Black and Latinx/e youth. She has a demonstrated history of leadership and capacity-building within non-profits and community organizations. Abby is passionate about diverse stakeholder engagement and practical applications of academic pursuits to inform effective, equitable, and sustainable policy. Abby is especially grateful to her mentors and support network— it is the reason why she is committed to giving back to her students, mentees, colleagues, and community. Conceptualized and designed a two week, interdisciplinary course for Summer@Brown called Consuming Culture: Food & Media Literacy (CEMS 0945)-Cultivate an inclusive and supportive learning environment to equip a diverse cohort of high school students from around the world with skills to navigate the college/university environment-Independently plan and lead five class sessions with mini-lectures, active learning activities, multimedia components, and a creative group project for a class of 18 students-Evaluate student assignments, provide comments on student performance, and identify opportunities for their improvement.
